Rule of thumb: if a service offers more than any licensed provider could afford to for a price no licensed provider could match, it is almost certainly unlicensed. One warning sign is a reason to be careful. Several together is a clear answer.

The 10 warning signs

  1. The price is too low. Thousands of channels, premium sports and pay-per-view events for a few dollars or pounds a month cannot cover the rights fees.
  2. It promises everything. Every sports package, every premium movie channel and every pay-per-view event from one seller is a red flag.
  3. Long plans at a discount. Yearly or multi-year offers push you to pay a lot up front to a seller that may not be around next month.
  4. No company details. A legitimate provider names its company, registered address and how to contact it, and has terms and a refund policy that you can read.
  5. Support only on WhatsApp, Telegram or social media. Licensed services have proper customer support channels.
  6. Odd payment methods. Gift cards, cryptocurrency, bank transfers to individuals or requests to pay "as friends" leave you with no protection.
  7. Apps from outside official stores. If you are told to install an app from a website, or to "sideload" it, be careful.
  8. Login by playlist link or Xtream code. Licensed services use their own apps and accounts.
  9. Resellers and panels. A seller who offers reseller credits or "panels" is usually passing on someone else's unlicensed supply.
  10. No official reviews or presence. The service does not appear in app stores, press coverage or independent review sites, only on its own pages and social posts.

Check a provider in 5 minutes

  • Search the company name and look for an address, registration and independent reviews.
  • Look it up in your device's official app store.
  • Read the terms and refund policy. Vague or missing terms are a warning.
  • Pay only by methods that give you protection, such as a credit card.
  • Compare the price with a licensed provider's current offer.

If you have already paid

  • Stop paying and do not send further money or personal details.
  • Change passwords you may have reused.
  • Check your statements and tell your bank about unfamiliar charges.
  • Remove apps installed from outside official stores and run a security scan.
  • Report fraud to your national reporting service.

Common questions

What should I do if I already paid an illegal IPTV provider?+

Stop paying and do not send further money or personal details. Change any password you reused, check your bank or card statements for unfamiliar charges, and contact your bank if you see any. Remove any apps installed from outside official stores.

Where can I report a fraudulent seller?+

Use your national fraud reporting service: Action Fraud (now Report Fraud) in the UK, or ReportFraud.ftc.gov with the FTC in the US.

Are free trials of IPTV safe?+

Free trials from licensed providers are. Free trials from unlicensed sellers are often a way to collect your contact details and move you onto a paid plan.
